Job Description – Legal Counsel, Affiliate and App Distribution Lawyer

Our Client is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its Legal Department, focusing on the affiliate and app distribution areas. Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, the Legal Counsel will provide commercial legal advice and hands-on collaboration to support client’s business teams in affiliate and platform negotiations, with an emphasis on drafting the resulting contract documents. The role will be responsible for matters relating to both traditional television services and the increasingly important app distribution sector.

Based in downtown Toronto (currently the role is remote), the Legal Counsel will operate in a fast-paced, dynamic, and team-oriented environment, as well as collaborate closely with fellow legal team members and others in the company. As the ideal candidate, you will have two to five years of commercial law experience, gained at a reputable law firm or a large corporation, with significant demonstrated interest in the broadcasting industry and emerging digital platforms.

Success in this position requires excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; a passion for accurate and precise drafting; strong business acumen; and the ability to take initiative and thrive in a fast-paced environment. Relevant experience in or familiarity with the regulatory rules of the broadcasting industry and with digital distribution environments, and/or relevant experience with agreements regarding distribution of products or services is preferred. Bilingualism would be considered an asset, but is not required.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Provide commercial legal advice and hands-on collaboration to support client’s business teams in affiliate and platform negotiations.
Draft contract documents.

Education and Professional Skills/Knowledge

LL.B. or J.D. degree (or equivalent).
Good standing with a Canadian Law Society.
2-5 years of commercial law experience, gained at a reputable law firm or a large corporation, with significant demonstrated interest in the broadcasting industry and emerging digital platforms.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
A passion for accurate and precise drafting and strong business acumen.
Ability to take initiative and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
