Productions include 16 seasons of the multi-Gemini nominated drama series Murdoch Mysteries for CBC, Acorn TV and UKTV; Slasher; Hudson and Rex for Citytv/Rogers Sports & Media and Departure for Global/Corus Entertainment. The legal department plays an integral role in this organization. Legal takes a ‘hands on’ approach to the physical production and is called upon to advise on all aspects of this Company’s work, including project development, production, sales/distribution and digital/ new media series and marketing. You will be negotiating and drafting a variety of production related agreements such as, writer and director agreements, actor agreements and location agreements as well as providing legal advice on production matters such as clearing rights. As Shaftesbury continues to grow, it has a need for an additional lawyer. This position will report directly to the VP Legal and Business Affairs.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 4-7 years of corporate / commercial experience gained at a well-known law firm. Strong drafting skills and experience analyzing legal problems from a business perspective will be important. The ability to juggle a number of matters at one time, prioritize and maintain an organized practice is essential. You should also be detail oriented, resourceful and enthusiastic about the industry. The ability to take initiative and ownership of a matter as well as work independently will also stand you in good stead. Any production experience, especially on the drama side, would be an asset as the job will entail negotiating on the Company’s behalf with Guilds and agents.
